OXFORD Motor Club is reviving one of its most popular events, the Hogmanay Autotest.

The event returns tomorrow, after a three-year gap during which the club had been unable to find a suitable venue, and will be staged at the Westminster Sport Centre, at Oxford Brookes University's Harcourt Campus.

The venue is just a mile from the event's 1970s base at the former Hartford Motors site, at Seacourt Tower, which was used for many years and drew crowds of onlookers.

Neil Lewis, of Oxford Motor Club, said: “An autotest is a test of manoeuvring skill around a short course set out using traffic cones.

“The time it takes you to traverse the course will be recorded and penalties will be applied for touching course markers or going the wrong way. “The winner will be the competitor with the lowest score on the day.

“Cars may be shared between two or more competitors and entries will be accepted from age 14 — so it's a chance for our younger members to join in. It sounds simple but it is also an exciting, sociable but low-cost form of motorsport.”

The first car is due to start the course at 10.30am and the event will finish at 4pm.

Lewis said: “The owners will kindly open the Sports Centre on that day as our headquarters and within there are toilets and vending machines providing hot drinks and snacks. Westminster College is on top of a hill and very exposed to cold winds, so please wrap up warmly.”
