THE village school closed in 1962 when the number of pupils fell to just seven. Headmistress Miss FM Parrott is pictured with her charges as closure loomed. At one time, the village had schools with nearly 150 pupils.

More than £100 was raised for church funds at an autumn fair in 1971. Among the many stalls in the village hall was one selling hats. In the second picture, Gwynneth Bond-Thomas, eight, left, looks for a bargain while Linda Miller, 10, serves and gives advice.

In the third picture, Mark and Jerome Watson dig in the sandpit in a new children’s playground in 1960. Money was provided by the Hon Arthur Villiers, second son of the Earl of Jersey, whose family lived at Middleton Park for nearly 200 years until 1946.
