HOMELESS people in Oxford got a bumper delivery of food, clothing and games this Christmas.

The goodies were handed over to Lucy Faithfull House, in Speedwell Street, by Pete and Carol Ann Bonney.

They were donated by people visiting the Christmas light display at the couple’s Wood Farm home.

Mr and Mrs Bonney also spent Christmas Day helping serve dinner to residents at the hostel.

Mr Bonney, 72, said: “It is a really good amount this year and we are really grateful to everybody who helped out.

“It’s really important at this time of year to try to do a little something for people worse off than yourself.”

The Bonneys spend every Christmas Day serving lunch to the city’s homeless population They vowed to help homeless people in Oxford after spending nine months on the streets themselves 40 years ago.

For the sixth year running, the couple transformed their home and garden in Nuffield Road, installing a 10ft Santa Claus, giant snow globe and hundreds of twinkling Christmas lights.

Among the donations were sleeping bags, toothbrushes and shoes.

Mr Bonney added: “We know what it is like to be on the streets and you never forget those days.”

Lucy Faithfull House is a 61-bed hostel for homeless men and women.

Two Saints chief executive Louise Barnden, who turned on the couple’s Christmas lights in November, said: “These types of donations are particularly important at this time of year. Firstly because it’s very cold but also because it’s Christmas, and many residents at the hostel don’t have families or friends to share it with.”

Fundraising manager Pete Holding added: “Pete and Carol raise the plight of homelessness and try to remove its stigma, which is very important as well.”
