Supermarket chain Tesco has submitted an appeal after Vale of White Horse District Council refused planning permission for a store in Faringdon.

Councillors rejected the application in October, on the grounds that the Park Road store would divert trade from the town centre and was on a site earmarked for industrial use.

Sophie Akokhia, Tesco’s corporate affairs manager, said: “We believe we made a very strong planning case for our new foodstore.

“Our application was supported by more than 500 local residents who registered their support.

“We had hoped that members would have taken on board the views of the local community.

“Unfortunately, they did not, so we have lodged an appeal.”
