Sir – Many cyclists in Oxford appear to be seeking death by cycling at great speed in the dark whilst wearing grey or black clothes and without bells or lights.

Not only is such behaviour reckless, but also very selfish. The motorists who will inevitably hit them will have their death or injury on their conscience for the rest of their lives.

The only winners will, as so often is the case, be the lawyers who have to assess the blame and award any damages.

Although police appear to be as common as hen’s teeth these days, could I ask that they mount an urgent campaign to warn, or prosecute, errant cyclists about the likely end to their folly.
