More than 30 members of the OCG are showing work at The Oxfordshire Museum, Woodstock, in the lead-up to Christmas.

Their aim in this annual show, now in its 29th year, is to offer people a chance to find a hand-made gift for the special person in their life.

The work on show is stunning. The top piece, which will be added to the Oxford Collection of Contemporary Craft, is Amanda Hislop’s Waves Wash Ashore, created from paint, fabric, paper and stitches (pictured). The judges were intrigued by the way Amanda has managed to capture the vast expanse and ever- moving swell of the sea in such a small space.

James C. Cochrane, who creates models of dogs, people and some rather comic creatures out of papier-mâché, has come up with some great pieces this year. Few viewing his work can fail to laugh as they pass his display. The glass fusion technique that Pam Armitage has perfected is so colourful it is worth taking a second look at her ornaments. They sparkle like Christmas lights when the light falls on them. Selma Stagg’s handmade jewellery is lovely, too — indeed the perfect gift — and Barbara Shaw’s textile pictures capture the essence, texture and energy of her subjects. She is an artist who uses fabric as others use paint, drawing inspiration from her surroundings.

Woodturner Richard Shock, who helped co-ordinate the exhibition, is pleased that so many of the guild members are coming up with new ideas and mastering new techniques, which means that the exhibits all reflect the way art and craft continues to evolve.

The show is on till December 29, and open Tuesdays to Saturdays 10am to 4.45pm and 2pm to 4.45pm on Sundays. It will be closed December 24 to 28 inclusive.
