FROM sitting in bath tubs and throwing jelly throwing to visits from daleks, people all over Oxfordshire celebrated Children in Need in true wacky style today.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the annual BBC chairty fundraiser, and county residents are hoping to help smash the £39m raised by last year’s event.

Among those getting into the spirit, were staff and pupils from Rose Hill Primary School, who spent the day in their pyjamas in aid of the charity.

The Red Lion pub in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell invited a dalek from Doctor Who to its Children in Need celebration and invited local schoolchildren to meet the futuristic robot in exchange for a donation.

Children at the Old Station Nusery in RAF Benson were given a chance to get their own back on staff while they were relaxing in the bath, by pelting jelly at them.

And staff at the Churchill Hospital, in Headington, were pelted with water and foam by ‘unruly patients’.

Sixth formers at King Alfred’s School in Wantage spent the day shaking tins and selling snacks, before settling down to a big sleepover to watch the action on the big screen.

Assistant headteacher Jon Smart said the school was hoping to raise as much as possible. He said: “Everyone has worked really hard.”

Staff at British Gas Business in Cowley once again acted as a call centre for the event this year, answering phones and handling pledges from across Oxfordshire.

Call centre volunteers were entertained by Oxford boy band The Vibe, balloon modelling, henna tattooing and face painting.

David Ramsden, BBC Children in Need chief executive, said the broadcaster was “humbled and inspired” by money raised annually.
