Sir – I am delighted to enlist Gert Westermann into my crusade against cyclists (Letters, November 4).

I firmly believe that if I drive my car through red lights, on the pavement or without lights at night-time, the police should certainly confiscate it — and probably me for several years.

My only fear is this. Given the state of our society, it won’t be long before the police are entitled to fetch away an elderly man smoking a (tobacco-filled) cigarette outside the Holywell Music Room, whilst the surrounding mayhem goes on unabated.
