Sir – Following Saturday’s appalling revelation that Oxfordshire has some of the worst school results in the country, I think the county’s parents and taxpayers are entitled to ask what is going on.

No doubt Michael Waine, the head of county education, has been paid a very substantial allowance/salary to preside over this disaster. Why should public money be used to reward failure in this way?

I hope Mr Waine will be considering his position — or is it too much to expect anyone in the council to take responsibility for such incompetence?
