Two people have been arrested after a baby girl was left fighting for her life with a serious brain injury.

The eight-month-old child was admitted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford with "critical" head injuries yesterday.

Police spokesman Tim Wiseman said: "The baby is critical, with a serious brain injury and the next 24 hours will be crucial to its survival. We are in the early stages of a complicated investigation and it wouldn't be appropriate for us to release further details. We are investigating the circumstances of the child being taken to hospital."

A 17-year-old man was arrested and was in police custody at St Aldate's police station, Oxford yesterday.

A 24-year-old woman was arrested and was in custody at Abingdon Police Station.

Both were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
