The vet who suggested that the Uffington White Horse (Oxford Mail, October 13 and The Insider, October 21) might be a greyhound, was an attempt at controversy by the clearly naïve.
Greyhounds were not known in Ancient Britain when the White Horse was created 3,000 years ago. Similar horse designs were used on coinage of the era, the horse being a symbol of strength and majesty.
Greyhounds were probably introduced to Britain during the Crusades nearly 2,000 years later.
