The idea of an extra levy on late-night opening venues to pay for the extra policing and additional services they involve is a good one.
There is no doubt that the trend towards more later opening is bringing with it some serious issues that need to be dealt with.
Just ask the residents of East Oxford who have endured the worst ever start to a university year in terms of late-night disturbance.
Late-night opening creates particular problems and at a time when many public services are not active. Providing them at this time costs more, so someone has to pay for it.
