Sir – Since the end of the First World War, Remembrance Sunday has been a moment when we remember and honour the courage and sacrifices made by our armed services.

Today, the conflict in Afghanistan and its continuing toll of young lives bring home to us directly into our own lives the pain of war. We know families and friends who have suffered the loss of their loved ones.

Traditionally the British Legion have carried out their caring work for the armed services and their dependents. Additionally, over the last years, in Oxford they have organised a silent show of respect for the repatriations of servicemen brought home from the war and many of us have been moved to join them in these public demonstrations of our respect for the fallen.

The calls on the British Legion’s resources are increasing. The main source of their funding is the Poppy Appeal.

So, I am writing to ask the people of Oxford to give generously once again to this year’s Poppy Appeal. This is an opportunity for us all to show our appreciation in a practical way that will help those who have fought and are now in need of some special support.

John Goddard, Lord Mayor of Oxford
