Sir – So, common sense is about to break out amongst the planners! Hurrah! It’s been far too long coming and one can think of a number of other city sites where it would be invaluable.
I may not be the only person who remembers a period during the disastrous rebuilding of the square when the constructors put an old oil drum outside the Royal Oxford, thereby creating an impromptu roundabout and miraculously the traffic flowed slowly but easily round it until it was replaced by the scheme clearly created by a drunken spider!
I hope I am not a vindictive person but my question is, “Whose head will roll?” We know who will pay for this new work and who has paid for the previous design and for the subsequent removal of the cobble stones and their replacement by tarmac, but who will own up to responsibility for the mistakes of the past and take the consequences?
Michael Wright, Headington
