Sir – A roundabout in the area which is now Frideswide Square is nothing new. (Report, October 21). In 1965, we councillors on the Highways Committee interviewed candidates for the post of City Engineer to replace the one who was about to retire.
We agreed that we should choose someone who could stand up to the City Architect. This was because the architect was against our committee’s plan for a roundabout by the Royal Oxford Hotel.
This is why we apppointed Mr Tom Morris because of his strong character and he was an excellent choice. Sadly, in the end we never got our roundabout and some of us have regretted it ever since.
