TRADERS celebrating the first anniversary of Witney’s £50m Marriotts Walk shopping centre have hailed it as a success, saying it has created 350 jobs and boosted business in the town.
Manager Lynne Shawyer said: “We’re doing very well and business is good at the centre, with footfall averaging 55,000 people a week.
“With three new shop openings in as many months, I would say that our future is looking very positive.”
Richard Langridge, West Oxfordshire District Council’s cabinet member for the economy, said: “There seems to be a strengthening of the retail economy in Witney generally and I would like to think that Marriotts Walk has played a key part in that.”
Lesley Semaine, chairman of Witney Chamber of Commerce, said: “Marriotts Walk has definitely been good for Witney, without a shadow of a doubt.”
To mark the anniversary, the shopping centre is hosting a Continental market from today until Sunday, and on Saturday there will be magic shows, face painting and a carousel for children. Debenhams department store hosts a cosmetics party and fashion show tomorrow.
