A NURSE has been struck off after threatening residents suffering from dementia at a nursing home with violence.

Kanthee Ramdhunee, 69, was found not fit to work at the Cotswold Home, in Burford, by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Ramdhunee, originally from South Africa, was found to have shouted at and threatened residents at the home.

According to statements read to the council, in August 2008, Ramdhunee threatened a resident, another dementia sufferer referred to as Resident B, on one or more occasions.

The panel heard Resident B, who suffered from memory problems and arthritis, often called out to staff during the night because she was “nervous and required constant reassurance about her safety”.

Alex Mills, for the NMC, said: “On the night of 6 August 2008, staff at the care home saw the registrant standing in the doorway to Resident B’s room, saying ‘if you don’t be quiet I will shut the door and turn out the light’.

“She was speaking loudly and her tone was described as stern, as if reprimanding a child.”

Ramdhunee, who now lives in Gloucester, was also found to have threatened another resident, known as Resident A, with violence.

It was alleged Resident A pinched the nurse, although the council noted no record had been made of the incident in the resident’s diary notes and the manager of the home was not told.

Care assistants at the home, in Bradwell Grove, also reported on the same night Ramdhunee had told them to ‘watch out’ because she was in a bad mood.

A spokesman for the Nursing and Midwifery Council said: “The panel decided to make a striking off order for the protection of the public including patients and in order to maintain public confidence in the profession.

“The misconduct is a serious departure from the relevant standards as set out in the NMC Code of Professional conduct.”

A spokesman for Elizabeth Finn Homes, which runs the home, said: “Ms Ramdhunee’s employment ended in September 2008 when we alerted the NMC and the Care Quality Commission.

“We are extremely proud of our teams and the caring role they play and take prompt action if we consider that any employee is not upholding the qualities that we are known for.”
