PARISH councillors have stepped in to give children with special needs a playtime boost in Blackbird Leys, thanks to the Oxford Mail.

Earlier this month, staff at Mabel Prichard School on Oxford’s largest estate appealed to the community for help to buy new play equipment.

The playground was extended over the summer, but there was no money left for equipment.

But when Blackbird Leys Parish Council chairman Gordon Roper saw our report, he knew the council would be able to help.

Now councillors are set to approve a £2,000 grant to help buy equipment including a sandpit, playhouse and planting beds.

The special school teaches children with physical disabilities and learning difficulties, including autism.

Nursery leader Anna Panter said: “The parish councillors have been brilliant and very supportive.

“We have also been given £100 by the Conservative Club in Headington, who had a raffle last weekend and gave the proceeds to our appeal.

“We would like to thank them very much.

“A couple of members of the public have also offered a few toys that they no longer require.”

Mr Roper said: “We told them we will grant them £2,000 for them to spend. They said they wanted planters for the children, so I said we should get Pathway Workshop to make them.

“That way it keeps the money on the estate.”

Pathway Workshop makes garden furniture and other wooden items and provides training and employment for adults with physical and learning difficulties.

Mr Roper added: “We like to improve these children’s quality of life where we can.

“It’s always been something close to my heart.”

Mike Kyle, of the Pathway Workshop, in Dunnock Way , said: “We’re delighted to be involved in updating the outdoor play equipment.

“We always like to be able to help local organisations.

“It’s a pleasure to do so and by keeping the money on the estate, we’re supporting each other.”

The school, in Cuddesdon Way, opened in 1954 and was named after Mabel Prichard, awarded the OBE for her commitment to public health and welfare in Oxford.
