Over the years there have been lots of great Italian artists and sculptors. Da Vinci, Donatello, Bernardi. Their names live on in Dan Brown books and tourist attractions.

These great men have left a trail of stunning works. Indeed, there are so many paintings, statues and designs dotted around that Italy should change from being a country to being a giant museum.

But there are no greater designers, to my mind, than Enzo Ferrari. His creations were lip-smackingly, knee-tremblingly beautiful, but also – and this should be overlooked – fantastically useful. After all, Michelangelo’s David won’t get you to work and back.

So, in honour of this man and his cars, this week’s piece is about the most beautiful machine Hollywood has ever been lucky enough to discover.

It isn’t equipped with the best handling Ferrari has ever had. It isn’t the most technological car ever to leave Rome. But it is simply the most perfect.

I’m talking of course about the Ferrari 575 M Maranello.

It featured in Bad Boys and immediately outclassed Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the two laid-back policemen.

There is nothing laid-back about this car.

It does 0-60 in only 4.2 seconds. In less than 10 seconds you can make it to 100mph.

And it doesn’t stop there. This car can get to 202mph. Quite frankly, if you’re in anything faster, it’s a jet.

But the reason I chose this car is its looks. If you’re reading this in the newspaper just stare at the picture for a few seconds. If you’re reading on the Internet, then Google it.

Generally I’m for freedom of expression but in this case I’m accepting only one answer. If you don’t think this car is absolutely gorgeous then you’re wrong; that’s it. Any time this car wanted to make the change from supercar to supermodel, it could.

Every single detail is glossy and smooth. There are no imperfections. From the side it’s sleek and elegant. From the front it’s aggressive.

Seriously, the front is the stuff of children’s nightmares. The whole bonnet slopes forwards in a way that looks as though the car is hunting you down.

As director Michael Bay demonstrated with his endless chase scenes, a Ferrari can never be dull.

The 575 is unreliable, costly and, with 12mpg, uneconomical. But not dull.

This car is the girl in Vegas. She won’t stand by you, she won’t be responsible, but for $224,000 you can have one hell of weekend.
