I cannot comprehend the logic attributed to Olaf Swarbrick’s belief that the White Horse at Uffington is something other than a horse (yesterday’s Insider column).

Indeed, I am also amazed that the Oxford Mail believes these views are newsworthy enough to print a dialogue that disputes the very fabric of our history.

There are two distinct arguments here, the reason we know it to be a horse is that this statement has been passed down over the years from century to century and from generation to generation.

History is just that, and even if its original identification was incorrect, virtually thousands of people who have lived in the location have been brought up to believe it is a horse.

The second is much more scientific, and is based on the plain fact that I would like to challenge Mr Swarbrick to carve out the outline of any animal 360ft by 130ft on the side of a hill – without the use any technology and the ability to view it from overhead, which was never the intention of the originator.

The White Horse of Uffington was only intended to be viewed by the people who came or lived directly within eyesight of this historic monument and then only from ground level. Can you ever imagine that the people who created this part of our heritage ever expected to see a photograph of what they had achieved, taken from a height and angle that people in 1000BC would find impossible to comprehend, let alone find it in a newspaper.

I always thought vets and Journalists had some common sense.
