Sir – JP Roos (letter, October 14) is right that the car traffic in Divinity Road is terrible, just as terrible, if not worse than the drunken pedestrians in the middle of the night.

It’s now a couple of decades since the last attempt to deal with the through traffic, and perhaps the council’s scars have healed sufficiently to have another go.

None of the side roads connecting Cowley Road with Headington is suitable for through traffic. If you close one route, the others get more traffic. So all the routes need to be blocked, to make the traffic divert via The Plain.

This can either be done by a couple of closures of Divinity Road and Stone Street, or more thoroughly by closing Warneford Lane.

To complete matters, Jeune Street, Rectory Road and Cross Street probably need to be closed as well.

As for the drunken pedestrians, the problem is only partly about students living in shared houses: at least they tend to head in different directions.

The problem is as much about students returning to halls of residence, walking the length of Divinity Road. It would certainly help if Brookes ran some buses from Cowley Road via The Plain to Headington Hill.

For better or worse, Cowley Road has become a major centre of student life, and there needs to be a reasonably direct bus service linking it to Brookes.
