Central Italy encompasses six of the country’s 20 regions including Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo and Marches as well as the famous Adriatic coast — a classic holiday destination. This is the area where the Renaissance flourished around Florence in the 15th century. It has been a famous wine-producing area since Roman times.

The Italian Classics case costs £94 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesu Classico, Moncaro 2009: From Italy’s famous Adriatic coast, this delicately scented white has a distinctive green colour with flavours of almonds and apple-crisp citrus fruit which is both rich yet delicate. Perfect as an aperitif or with light salads.

Orvieto Trappolini 2009: From Umbria, this wine has delightful floral, juicy ripe citrus fruit with limes, almonds and that mineral stony character that is found in many Italian whites. Ideal with fish or white meats.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Moncaro 2009: Grown in the hills of the Abruzzo region just south of Le Marche, and east of Tuscany, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the fourth most widely grown grape variety in Italy. Moncaro’s wine has delicious flavours of cherry, plum and blackberry with subtle hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. Wonderful with pizza.

Chianti La Pieve 2008: Italy’s most famous red wine, Chianti is the classic wine of Tuscany and is made predominately from the Sangiovese grape. This example has dried fruit, raspberry and black cherry, along with that classic rustic feel that is so redolent of the warm Tuscan hills. A classic partner to pasta dishes.
