A burst water main near one of Oxford's roundabouts caused major delays for drivers yesterday and more than 100 homes lost their water supply.

At 4.15am, Thames Water noticed water levels at Shotover reservoir were dropping and discovered a leak.

The company said 127 properties lost their water supply until 2pm, and one lane on the A40 approaching the Green Road roundabout from Oxford was closed mid-morning so repairs could take place. It was not reopened until about 9pm.

Thames Water spokesman Hilary Bennett apologised to customers for disruption to the service, and to drivers who suffered delays.
