OXFORD City Council will push ahead with plans to close Temple Cowley Pools – despite a 10,000-signature petition calling for it to stay.
The Temple Road pool is set to close under plans by the authority to build a new £16.8m swimming complex next to Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, Pegasus Road.
Campaigners presented the petition calling for it to stay to the council last night – but failed to force a rethink.
Opposition councillors called for a replacement on the existing site, but that was also defeated by a majority vote.
Lead campaigner Jane Alexander said she was disappointed, but would fight on.
Ms Alexander said: “We cannot afford to build a new pool but we can afford to keep Temple Cowley Pools open and refurbish it.”
But Labour councillor John Tanner said the pool was costing too much, adding: “It has been loved by many people but that is not a reason in itself to keep it open.”
