Sir – Thank you for informing us about the highly paid public servants working for Oxfordshire county and Oxford city councils. I think these pay rates for the senior manager roles are far too high and that the city and county council need to rethink their pay scales.

Unfortunately I also think that these high pay rates for senior manager council workers are a symptom of a much larger problem which is the obscenely high rates of pay for senior managers and chief executives in the private sector.

As a society I think we do ourselves a disservice by allowing such huge extremes of pay inequality.

It is clear that we not only need to address the issue of the highly-paid public servants but also the even higher levels of pay in the private sector.
