Vandals caused hundreds of pounds of damage after showering a Didcot shop with paint just weeks after it opened.

Staff at Oxford Beds, in Lower Broadway, were alerted to the damage when staff at a neighbouring business arrived for work.

Vandals had thrown white emulsion paint across the entrance door, warehouse wall, warehouse door and the car park.

The damage was caused between 5pm on Monday and 7.30am on Tuesday.

The company's area sales manager, John Beer, said: "We have only been here six or seven weeks and we get this.

"It's gone all along the front wall and across the shop's main entrance. A can of paint has been thrown at it and it has spread on to the asphalt."

He said that although the damage was limited to the outside of the shop, paint had been carried into the showroom on people's shoes.

Mr Beer said the shop, part of a chain of five across the county, was open as usual.

He said he did not know how much it would cost to remove but estimated the clean-up bill at hundreds of pounds.

He said the company was alerted to the damage by another firm on the trading estate at around 7.30am.

He added: "That company has CCTV but unfortunately, it doesn't cover as far as us."

Police spokesman Tim Wiseman said the incident was under investigation, but there were no witness reports or CCTV footage of the crime.

He added: "Criminal damage is a serious problem making up much of the recorded crime, not just in south Oxfordshire, but for the force as a whole."
