Teenager Joseph Wenman used a brand new high-performance Audi car his parents bought as a present for him to race police at more than 120mph, a court heard.

However, the 19-year-old, from Milton Road, Drayton, escaped jail after a judge was told his angry parents had forced him to sell the vehicle as punishment for getting into trouble.

Wenman went through red lights and took roundabouts the wrong way in his £23,000 Audi A4.

The court was shown a video recording of the chase, which began when a police car clocked him doing 98mph on the M4. The teenager's Audi could be seen overtaking other drivers on blind bends and skidding around corners in the 20-minute chase.

Prosecuting, Andrew Morgan said Wenman had only been stopped when police used a stinger device which burst his tyres, but even then he fled on foot.

Joel Smith, defending, said that the teenager "deeply regretted his moment of stupidity and madness".

Wenman, who admitted dangerous driving, was given a 51-week prison sentence, suspended for two years. He was ordered to do 300 hours community service, fined £600 and told to pay £200 costs. He was also banned from driving for four years.
