Police officers deployed a Taser in the early hours after they were called to an incident in Banbury.
Officers said they were called to an address in Winter Gardens Way shortly after 1am, following reports of a man with a knife making threats to harm himself.
A police spokesman said: "On arrival at the incident officers engaged with the man and a one stage had to aim their Taser device at him. However, the weapon was not discharged.
"The man was detained by officers at the scene who carried out an assessment of the situation before releasing the man without charge."
