Oxford United are going down this season – all in the name of charity.

Chairman Kelvin Thomas and manager Chris Wilder will not be plummeting to the bottom of the league table, but down the side of the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington They will be raising cash for the Oxford Children’s Hospital by tackling the 100ft-drop on Sunday, September 19.

Mr Thomas, who has made the hospital one of the club’s chosen charities, said: “There are 65,000 children who benefit from the hospital each year and we are very proud to help in any way we can.

“They tell me you get a great view across Oxford from the roof, but I’d never really considered lowering myself off it. But it is such a great cause that I will happily abseil down it.”

Staff and players at the football club have a track record of supporting the hospital by taking part in the OX5 Run at Blenheim Palace and visiting staff and patients each Christmas.

Mr Thomas added: “I hope the fans get behind this and maybe raise a team to join me, or at least pledge a little money.”

Almost 100 other brave fundraisers have already signed up for the abseil and applications are still open.

Oxford United spokesman Chris Williams said: “If you are a fan and have ever had to use the fantastic facilities at the Children’s Hospital then now is your chance to give something back.

“You can join Kelvin and Chris for the abseil; it’s easy to get involved, call 01865 743444 for an application form.

“But if you can’t face the drop then back Chris and Kelvin by donating to the Children’s Hospital online.

“It is extremely simple. Just go to justgiving.com/OxfordUnited to pledge your support. It doesn’t matter how big or how small your donation is, every penny will help.”
