I WRITE regarding the problems surrounding the policing of Magdalen Bridge on May Morning.

Some years ago I suggested a possible solution to jumpers on May Morning – scaffold poles, jutting horizontally out from the bridge, on both sides, with scramble nets, loosely looped between them. This would create, in effect, a giant basket.

From a standing start, I defy anybody to leap 10-12 feet to clear the net.

An added advantage would be, that if the parapets collapsed, the nets would catch the stone as well as the stoned.
