DAVID Cameron spoke of his delight last night after wife Samantha gave birth to a baby girl a month early during the family’s holiday in Cornwall.

The couple’s fourth child weighed 6lb 1oz and mother and baby are both doing well.

The Prime Minister’s wife went into labour and gave birth by Caesarean section yesterday at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

A beaming Mr Cameron told reporters the baby did not have a name yet, but said she would “have to have something Cornish in the middle”.

He said: “It was very exciting, we were on holiday, thought we were going to get through the holiday and then have a baby, and then it just seemed to kick off a bit quickly.”

“We woke up this morning and thought she was having contractions, so we thought we would come to the hospital just to get everything checked out.

“Then things sort of sped up and it all happened very, very quickly and the baby popped out at about 12 o’clock.”

Barry Norton, Mr Cameron’s agent in his Witney constituency and leader of West Oxfordshire District Council, said he got a text just after noon yesterday.

He added: “We are delighted they are all doing well.”

The Camerons suffered tragedy last year when their son Ivan, who had cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy, died aged six. Their other children are Nancy, six, and four-year-old Arthur.
