HE’S one of Oxford United’s biggest fans and has supported the team through thick and thin.

But Joshua Smith admits he was still pinching himself after lining up alongside his heroes for this season’s official team shot.

Joshua, who has learning difficulties, posed with the players at the Kassam Stadium after winning the 12th Man Fund’s annual raffle.

Donning his new kit, the 19-year-old also met his favourite player, James Constable, and had his picture taken with chairman Kelvin Thomas and manager Chris Wilder.

Last night Joshua, of Long Hanborough, said it had been an amazing experience.

He said: “It was really nice to meet all the players and be in the team shot.

“James Constable is my favourite player and it was exciting to have my photo taken with him as well.

“Everyone was very nice, it was an amazing day.”

Joshua went to Springfield School in Witney before heading to Abingdon and Witney college. He now volunteers for a charity and at a sweet shop.

He plays football for Oxford City Casuals, which is part of Oxford City Football Club and made up of people with learning difficulties.

Joshua believes the U’s are in for a tough season, but could have what it takes to challenge for promotion as the team prepare for Saturday’s opening clash at Burton Albion.

He said: “We have got some good players and play nice football. I am keeping my fingers crossed.”

Along with his family, Joshua stayed after the photoshoot to watch the U’s friendly clash against Manchester United, which the Yellow’s lost 2-1.

His stepfather, John Evans, thanked the club for its hospitality.

He said: “Joshua had a fantastic day and everybody at the club made him feel very welcome. He loved meeting the players.

“He got the opportunity through the 12th Man Fund, which continues to be a brilliant fundraising initiative for Oxford United.”

The fund, which receives donations from fans, was used last month to help sign centre back Jake Wright from Brighton. Club spokesman Chris Williams said: “It was great to have Joshua at the Kassam Stadium, the players all enjoyed having him around.

“The 12th Man Fund continues to offer fantastic support for the club.”
