Sir – This year, when we are in the midst of celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, it is timely to remember the significant contribution of No 1 Civilian Repair Unit, at the long-gone Cowley Airfield.

While the conflict raged over southern Britain, over 150 Hurricanes and Spitfires were repaired at Cowley, flight tested and returned to RAF squadron service.

With fighter aircraft in such short supply, the Cowley contribution may well have proved critical to the final outcome.

It should be remembered with pride by the city of Oxford.
