Sir – The two excellent letters in last week’s issue make a compelling case for retaining speed cameras.
However, the county council has to make cuts and they must fall somewhere. There is however a pragmatic compromise.
According to this week’s The Times, the Treasury gets £100m each year from speeding fines. This they will lose if other counties follow Oxfordshire’s example.
Would it not be possible to make a deal with the Treasury so that the paid fines are shared in such a proportion that the counties get sufficient to cover the cost of the cameras and the Treasury still get something out of it?
This would seem to benefit everyone concerned — apart from the idiots who insist on driving at 60mph through our country villages.
