BUTCHER Ian Pavier is hoping Wayne Rooney will make mincemeat of the Algerian defence in tonight’s big game.

England’s top striker played so deep against the USA on Saturday that he rarely troubled their goalkeeper.

But Mr Pavier, of Hedges butchers in Oxford’s Covered Market, said he was convinced the frontman would score in England’s second World Cup game.

He and his colleagues have covered their shop in the market with England flags to show their support. Mr Pavier, 47, from Bicester, who has worked at the butcher’s for 31 years, added: “I have even got an England apron to show that we are loyal supporters, and our customers love it.

“You have to celebrate England being in the World Cup while you have the chance.

“I thought Emile Heskey and Glen Johnson played particularly well in the first game and all we need now is for Wayne Rooney to get his shooting boots on.

“I think he will make mincemeat of the Algerian defenders tonight and I’m sure England will get out of the group quite easily – they should go far.”

Colleague Mark Stoker added: “England should beat Algeria quite comfortably.”
