I WRITE in response to the article (Oxford Mail, May 27), written by Dr Taj Hargey in The Issue column, regarding the War on Terror.

It is difficult to disagree with the principal argument of Dr Hargey, where we live in a country of many freedoms and rights which many can only dream of.

However, it cannot be the case that, as a society, we only accept the judgment of an open court to assess the suitability of people to remain in our country, regardless of their unlawful intent or actions.

There are very good reasons why, in the case of the two individuals concerned, that the information gathered to establish their intent to engage in such illegal activities could not be revealed in court.

In such cases, I am, and the mainstream British public I suspect are, happy to allow the relevant authorities to take such decisions, without trial, on our behalf.

Linking such an approach to apartheid, as Dr Hargey does, is reactionary and alarmist, and does not represent the facts.

For me and many others in the UK, it is a principled and robust response to the actions of such people.

Seek to destroy the human rights of law-abiding citizens of the UK, then accept that you forgo your own access to such rights.
