I READ that Oxford City Council has to find new sites for homes (Oxford Mail, May 27).

All this due to the new coalition Government’s moves to ditch the South East Plan.

I see city council leader Bob Price plans to discuss the matter with South Oxfordshire District Council but he fears last-ditch talks could fail and the council would be forced to increase housing numbers at other development sites in the city.

I wrote to the council about possible sites on which they could build affordable housing when they first became empty.

The first site I suggested was the Territorial Army barracks at The Slade, which could be used for council housing but no, they had to go and sell the site and what is on that site?

Yes, more student accommodation, as usual. That’s all they are interested in.

Site number two, Marywood House, also in The Slade, could have been refurbished or demolished and council places built on the site. This site is still standing unoccupied and has been for several years.

It looks to me as if the city council has no plans to use this valuable site to help ease their housing waiting list.

They would rather sell the sites which become available and then use that money on some other ludicrous scheme.

What a waste of taxpayers’ money. No wonder the council is in such a dire state.
