Sir – I imagine most residents of Abingdon have by now received notification of the new rubbish collection procedures from October.

I note the leaflet is very upbeat and makes no mention of the restrictions on householders, such as where the bins must be placed for collection — I understand they may have to be strictly within one foot of the perimiter of the dwelling and not on the pavement or verge, or they will not be emptied(never mind if this makes access for people with cars or prams etc).

Neither is there mention of any of the no-doubt swingeing penalties which will be enforced if anyone gets it wrong, or puts the wrong items in the wrong bins, or their bins out on the wrong day.

My emailed enquiry to Verdant, the operator of the scheme, recieved a curt reply from Call Centre Manager Paul Cherriman to the effect of “wait and see”.

I believe it is not good enough to tell those who pay the bills that full details will be included with the bins when they are delivered. People should be given accurate information, not a sugar-coated leaflet.
