Sir – Our new Tory/Lib Dem government should be ashamed of themselves. Their first proposals weren’t about securing the recovery or protecting jobs it was about rigging the electoral system to prevent them from being defeated.

First they want to change the way parliament is forced to call an election from a simple majority of one to now 55 per cent of MPs. Now they suggest reducing the size of constituencies.

Most Tory seats are large geographically and rural whilst most Labour seats are much smaller and usually more urban based, but importantly they have roughly the same number of electors making them equal. Whatever happened to the much-needed reform of the House of Lords?

Perhaps they’re forgetting there are more people sitting in the Lords than in the Commons so surely if they wanted to improve both democracy and accountability that’s where they should start?

Could it possibly be our new government is worried that the coalition won’t last and they will sooner or later be forced to face the country again?
