DEMONSTRATORS gathered in the centre of Oxford to condemn Israel’s attack on civilian ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

About 100 people held an hour-long vigil near Carfax Tower, Cornmarket, above, in memory of those killed in the military strikes.

The demonstrators, including Palestinians and their supporters from the Oxford branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Oxford University Palestine Society and local peace organisations, laid a Palestinian flag on the ground and lit candles on Monday night.

Hugh Jaeger, from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: “We were remembering the people who were killed by the commandos and demonstrating our support for the Palestinian people and the breaking of the illegal blockade of Gaza.”

Mr Jaeger said the demonstration had been organised because of a groundswell of public opinion in the city.He said: “Emails were flying all over the Internet.”

The groups are planning a second vigil and demonstration tomorrow evening, near Carfax Tower, at 6pm.

Mr Jaeger said the groups would be calling for an end to the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
