Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has said Witney MP and Tory leader David Cameron has the “first right” to seek to form the new Government.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, Mr Clegg said: “The Conservatives have the first right to seek to govern. That’s my view. It’s the Conservatives who have won more votes and more seats, although not a majority.

“It’s up to the Conservative Party to prove its capacity to govern in the national interest.”

However, Mr Clegg stressed that his party remained determined to lobby for an overhaul of the first-past-the-post voting system.

He said: “It’s clear our electoral system is broken.”
