TWO schoolboys are making the right moves in the world of competitive chess.

Jeffrey Levicki, 18, a pupil at Oxford's Magdalen College School, recently took part in the World Selection Tournament for the top junior players in the country.

He came fourth in the 18 and under section and, based on his performance, was invited to play in a international tournament representing England.

MCS’s junior school also has a new England chess player.

Daniel d’Souza-Eva, 11, has been selected for the England 11 and under squad following his success in trials.

Jeffrey, who lives near Bicester, said: “I have been playing chess since I was nine and I really enjoy the strategy.

“Some people don’t consider chess to be a sport but it can be mentally draining – when you play for six hours you need plenty of adrenalin to get you through.

“There is a lot of aggression the game.”

Daniel, who lives in Headington, added: “I started playing when I was six and my dad coaches me — I play a few times a week.

“I try to go to play in as many major tournaments as possible.”

John Place, 53, chess tutor at the school, said he was proud of the pair’s success.

He said: “The first chess club was formed at the school in 1886 so there is a long history of playing the game here.

“But in the past 20 years we have established a national reputation.”
