Sir – Oh my God! One of the stories in my collection The Haunted Bridge features someone planning to rebuild the ruins of Hampton Gay Manor (Report, April 29). You mean it’s true?
I only suggested it because it seemed such a crazily unlikely idea. I thought I was being funny.
The original report of the 1874 railway disaster completely belies the myth about the inhabitants of the manor not being helpful, by the way. It was used as a temporary mortuary for the bodies of the casualties.
In my story I suggest that their spirits haunt the ruins, and have their own way of dealing with anyone who ventures to interfere with them. Maybe I should send Mr Buxton a copy, before he gets too carried away.
