The celebrations were loud last night, but so was the message from United supporters – only half the job has been done!

More than 11,000 jubilant Oxford United fans filled the Kassam Stadium with songs and chants at the final whistle yesterday.

But, no sooner had the celebrations begun, thoughts turned to the task that lay ahead – a coveted return the Football League.

Club chairman Kelvin Thomas summed up the mood of the team, the fans and the club after the game, but stressed the champagne would remain on ice until the job was finished.

“We have got 90 minutes left to get into the Football League,” he said.

“It is now one game. It was 46 at the start of the season and now it is just one.”

Mr Thomas added: “We still have to make sure we do the job.”

But there was no escaping the magnitude of yesterday’s victory for a club that has waited four long seasons for a chance to return to the league.

“It is fantastic for the club, for the fans and everyone here has played part. It is huge,” said Mr Thomas.

“To get back to the Football League would be fantastic. It is where the club needs to be, and we are working hard to get there.”

It was a view echoed by United boss Chris Wilder, who said: “You have to enjoy moments like this.

“We will savour this. The players will have a day or two off, and then it will be back to getting everything right for Wembley.”

At the final whistle it was a mixture of relief and celebration for Oxford United’s fans as they turned the Kassam Stadium’s pitch into a sea of blue and yellow.

The sell-out crowd sang their hearts out for the United team as they returned for a lap of honour.

They also made sure they thanked supporters for the part they had played.

Minutes earlier, despite the two goal cushion, many fans had refused to believe their dream of Wembley had come true.

And, as the reality sank in, so did the prospect of a nail-biting play-off final clash against York City.
