Whisper it... Oxford United are on the brink. Smiles at the Kassam Stadium have been few and far between in recent years.

Being a United fan has not been much fun of late – not much fun at all.

But, for once – for at least a few days – Oxford supporters are going to be wearing pretty broad grins.

Wembley is beckoning.

And that means the stadium, the arch, the history, and the thousands of fans who are will make the trip down the M40.

Amid the celebrations, United must not and, with Chris Wilder at the helm, will not take their eyes off the prize.

The U’s are 90 minutes away from a return to the football league.

So, only half a job has been finished – the big game has yet to be won.

Although if any supporters deserve a break it is those loyal fans in yellow who have slogged their way to Barrow, Gateshead and Histon.

The days out at Sudbury in the FA Trophy... the word ‘dedication’ hardly covers it.

At the Kassam yesterday there were almost 12,000 fans for, what was still, a non-league game.

That is remarkable.

For the city to have a league team again would be great.

United may have let the league slip from their grasp, but they didn’t choke yesterday. They performed admirably.

A win at Wembley would boost the club’s coffers.

It could mean money to help United’s academy and also a share in TV cash again.

However, it would also be a boost to the city with even bigger attendances at games.

And, as if the day couldn’t have been any more perfect, Luton went and lost.
