IT IS WORTH bearing in mind that when O’Callaghan gets out of detention he will be just about the same age as Joshua Hammond, the brave trooper who died alongside Lt Col Rupert Thorneloe in Afghanistan.
What a comparison they make. Trooper Hammond, 18, at the time of his death, was obviously an incredibly brave young man.
As his mother said last night, he achieved more in 18 years than some people do with their whole lives.
Another man feeling a sense of parental pride is retired Major John Thorneloe, the father of Lt Col Thorneloe.
Yesterday, Major Andrew Speed told an inquest how Lt Col Thorneloe was prepared to do what his men did.
What a pair of inspirational men. We should be proud of them.
