Motorists continued to break speed limits despite police officers and members of public standing by roadsides with west Oxfordshire's new electronic warning signs.

Police now plan to return to the same hot-spots to start handing out written notices telling drivers to slow down and some could be stopped and fined.

Pc Richard Conner, joined members from the Eynsham area neighbourhood action group last week to take a portable speed indicator device (Sid) to roads in Cassington, North Leigh, South Leigh, Northmoor, Eynsham, Standlake and Stanton Harcourt, where speeding is a problem.

As reported by the Oxford Mail earlier this month, police have purchased two of the £5,000 Sids, which flash up and record the speed of cars travelling over the limit, as part of a drive to cut speeding.

Speaking from Eynsham on Friday, where the device was set up in the 30mph Hanborough Road, Pc Conner said some motorists were still driving over the limit despite himself and three members of public standing by the board in fluorescent jackets.

He and they also spotted many drivers not wearing seatbelts.

Pc Conner, who is responsible for policing the Eynsham area with another officer and a sergeant, said: "It's been very interesting taking the speed indicator out to the seven villages and we now plan to go back out, next time logging number plates so that we can send out warning letters."
