Highways managers always face a barrage of criticism when major roadworks take place. Inevitably, there is congestion. The work at Green Road roundabout is being carried out to benefit us all. When it is finished it should ease congestion.
It is legitimate, however, to question whether the county council has done enough to ensure the work is carried out quickly enough. Night-time working would be too disruptive to residents, it says. But why no weekend working?
We cannot help wondering whether concerns over cost are the real reason for not working at nights or at weekends.
The council is not the only one picking up the costs for congestion at Green Road. Individuals and businesses are picking them up too.
