Sir, I was incensed by the first paragraph of your article headed "Oxford's recycling must improve". It said: "Oxford's residents have been told to recycle more after the city was labelled the worst in the South East". Many of us are only too well aware of this from anecdotal evidence when visited by people who live elsewhere and who are amazed that we don't have kerbside recycling of plastic and cardboard. I am sure I am not the only person to have contacted city councillors on this topic.

Last Saturday morning I took a bag full of plastic for recycling to the Headington recycling centre, to find that the containers for plastic had disappeared.

There was a large pile of carrier bags containing plastic to which I and the other two people who arrived within 30 seconds contributed.

We all agreed that residents are very happy to recycle but that it is the city council which is dragging its feet and not providing the facilities for us to do so.

Please do not blame "residents" for the poor record of recycling, but place the blame where it is due for the half-hearted recycling efforts in the city.

Sheila Allcock (Mrs), Headington
