Churches in Charlbury have set themselves a target of raising more than £8,000 for charity in one weekend.

From 10am on Saturday and Sunday, St Mary's Church, in Church Road, will be filled with flower arrangements, paintings, textiles, sculpture and glass from local artists and craftsmen. Most of the items on show will be for sale.

The event, called Arts and Flowers - a Celebration for Christian Aid, has been organised by Churches Together in Charlbury as part of its annual fundraising for Christian Aid Week.

The group aims to provide money for 10 wells in drought-stricken Mali. It is Africa's poorest country and regular droughts have meant serious food shortages. Less than 30 per cent of the population have access to clean water.

The Rev Judy French, of Churches Together in Charlbury, said: "All you and I have to cope with is a hosepipe ban and a challenge to use our water more efficiently. But for millions of people in the world it's about finding enough water to stay alive.

"Each well will cost £850 and we need to raise £8,500 for Mali in one weekend so we're aiming high. "
